iPad Webcam
The iPad is a wonderful device which provides numerous features and enables the use of many applications. However, there are still a few disadvantages about it, one of them being that it does not have a built-in camera. Apple tried to solve part of this problem, by creating a very useful accessory: the iPad Camera Connection Kit.
This kit helps you import photos from your digital camera to your device and enjoy them on the amazing display of the iPad. There are two methods of doing this: you can use the USB cable from your digital camera, or import them straight from the SD card. The Camera Connection Kit therefore provides two connectors with different interfaces.
The first of them features an interface USB-type. You have to plug the USB port into your iPad, using the dock connector of the device. Then, with an USB cable, which is not included in the Kit, you have to attach your digital camera or your iPhone to the iPad.

Secondly, the Camera Connection Kit provides an SD card reader. With this card reader you can import photos directly from your digital camera’s SD card. The process in really simple, you only need to insert the SD card of your camera into the slot the SD card reader provides.
After you make one of these two connections, the iPad will automatically get you into the Photos applications, where you will choose pictures you want to import and organize them in photo albums. The Camera Connection Kit supports only standard formats of pictures, such as JPEG and RAW.
Since Apple first released the Camera Connection Kit on the market, a question appeared: could we use a webcam with it?
The answer to this question is very simple: No, we can not. We could try plugging the webcam’s USB into the dock connector for USB that the Camera Connection Kit provides. However, the two are incompatible and the webcam would still not work on your iPad. The dock connector is created to work exclusively with digital cameras and cannot be tricked that easily. Moreover, in order to work, a lot of types of webcams need several drivers installed, and you cannot install them on the iPad. Not even jailbreaking your iPad with specific software will solve the problem.
There is, however, one company that claims to have found the solution to this problem. The company is called Photofast, and it is famous for creating flash memory products, especially iPad accessories.
Photofast developed a concept camera, created from a Microsoft LifeCam, which can be connected to the iPad’s dock port. This camera is expected to be fully custom and produce high-quality images.
In any case, this camera has not yet been released on the market.
The Camera Connection Kit is a very useful accessory for your iPad, but it is not a good investment if you are planning to use it with a webcam.11
