Hulu Plus comes on a market that includes as direct competitors YouTube, Crackle and Netflix that are all compatible with the iPad. However, when it comes to professional quality TV, Hulu Plus remains the better choice. The app itself is available for free, but in order to enjoy the services it can offer you will have to pay a fee of $7.99 a month. There is also available a free Hulu service that’s browser-based, but you won’t benefit from the same variety of shows and high maximum resolution (720p) that gives Hulu Plus the upper hand in front of its competitors.

In terms of functionalities, the paid Hulu Plus version doesn’t offer more than the free version. The only difference is that the paid version allows you to access more content. With the free version you can only watch the last five episodes of your favorite show. It would be a shame to limit your options when Hulu Plus is able to provide such a wide content choice due to its 260 providers that include ABC, Comedy Central and Viz Media – CBS. That means you get to watch entire seasons of shows and better quality movies in great resolution.

The interface made available simplifies things for end users, because it’s well organized around a few categories: a Main section, a section dedicated to TV, another one to Movies, a Queue category, a Featured section, a Most Popular tab and a Recently Added section. Once you select a movie or a show you only need to tap on it to start watching it. If you aren’t yet convinced to watch a certain movie, you can choose from the options displayed when you tap the movie’s thumbnail the link that directs you to a webpage with additional details or if you want to watch it later, you can add it to the queue.

If you choose to watch a movie on your iPad using Hulu Plus, you will notice that streaming is smooth when it comes to both audio and video playback. Images look sharp and crisp. However, in order to achieve this level of quality, you will need to have a reliable wireless connection. The only thing that may discourage users is the presence of ads. Considering that we are talking about a paid service you’d expect at least a reduced number of ads.
